Facilitating Ease of Media Exchange & Sampling with Cell Culture Inserts
This Auto Exchange 24 Well Plate can be used with different types of cell inserts of various shapes available from different manufacturers. The Auto Exchange 24-Well Plate provides a safe and novel method for media exchange as it allows sufficient space for the pipette tip insertion without removing the cell culture insert. This minimizes the vibration or disruption of the cells. As the insert does not have to be removed, this method is compatible with automation for culture and cell-based assays.
This method has been designed using the capillary force of the grooves around the bottom inside of the well ensuring complete media replacement.
Background & Plate Description
Permeable membrane cell culture inserts are normally used to grow cells to evaluate cellular functions, such as barrier formation, permeability, cell migration, and angiogenesis. During the maintenance of these cultures on cell culture insert plates, the media needs to be changed with fresh media and samples may need collected from apical (top of the insert) and basolateral (bottom of the insert) sides of the cell cultures.
The access to the basolateral compartment to replace media or collect samples could be challenging in standard insert plates, since the gap between the well of most standard 24-well plate and the insert is insufficient to use a pipette or aspirator without risking possible damage to the cell layer.
To conduct the media exchange or sample collection, inserts must be lifted one at a time, using tweezers or other tools, which is a labor-intensive process. The 24-well Auto Exchange plate allows easy media exchange and sampling with cell culture inserts, overcoming tedious individual insert lifting and mitigating the risk of damaging samples and facilitating automation and high throughput analysis with cell culture inserts (e.g., automated TEER measurement).
